What is underlying issue for my car - wheel problems on Acura Integra?

I own a 1999 Acura Integra with 120,000 miles on it, that has always run great. It seems however that whenever it does need repairs it always revolves around brake/wheel problems. I had to replace both front wheel bearings in Jan 2007 and again in Jan 2008. The ABS sensors on at least one of my wheels is dead. The front rims on my car have darkened a bit. It looks heat-related to me. It does not just wipe off, I have tried using many different cleaners. They are often hot to the touch after driving too. The back rims on the other hand look fine. Have had to replace brakes and brake pads within the past year as well (although this seems like normal wear and tear to me)

My question is this...does this sound like there may be some underlying condition with my car that is causing so many wheel problems. If so, what are some possibilities? The thing that strikes me as odd is the 2 wheel bearing changes and the heat-charred rims. Whenever I take it to a shop nobody ever suggests anything even when I raise the issue. Even the Acura shop said nothing.

Maybe unrelated, but I replaced the muffler system 2-3 years ago, and right now I need to do it again.

Thank you.

The wheel bearings should probably be warranty, and the dust on the rims is probably normal break dust, if you get ceramic pads next time it will cut down on the brake dust. It is normal for the rim to be slightly warm or hot after driving....it is bolted to the rotor which absorbs almost all of the heat from braking.

If you live somewhere where it snows or rains alot then it's not suprising that is all you've had to do for a car with 120,00 miles. It's pretty average. I've seen alot of cars with wheel bearing going out. Although if only the front ones went bad try getting a front end alignment.
You have a stuck brake caliper. You probably got the brakes so hot that it baked the grease out of the wheel bearing. You'll need to replace the caliper and the rotor. Hopefully that'll solve your problem.
Your ABS sensor could be the problem its activating the brakes when they don't need to be there for overheating you brake disks

LOOSE WHEEL BEARINGS ON FRONT WHEELS?

whenever I drive my front tires make a sound similar to that of a flat tire but the tires r new and they are not on flat,I know a wheel bearing change is very costly I called pep boys and they said 600$ I'm not willinng to pay anyone know where I can go ? and do I just need them tightened? I'm 100% sure that I will not pay for new ones just something I refuse to do so ill just continue to drive until they fall off ,can I tighten them myself please help me
LOOSE WHEEL BEARINGS ON FRONT WHEELS?
Changing wheel bearings is a do-it-yourself job if you have a torque wrench. Although, Some bearing replacements require a Hydraulic press.

I would go to http://mibearings.com and fill out the form on the right. Ask them if you need any special tools to replace the bearings.

(Also, if you do it yourself you are looking at $40 to $200 (max) in cost)

Good Luck!
LOOSE WHEEL BEARINGS ON FRONT WHEELS?
They can not be just tightened. They have to be replaced. Sorry,
i just fix a niegbors car bearings the other day. cost of bearings=40 dollars=cost of labor=case of bud lite. sorry someone is pulling your leg.
if it,s a rear wheel drive then maybe all the bearings need is packed with grease and adjusted. jack up your car and see if you can shake the wheels.

I have a 2002 hyundai elantra 125000 mi i have a humming noise coming from the passenger side wheel area when?

driving and when i turn the wheel to the left it gets louder. is this a wheel bearing? i did jack the car up and checked the the wheel for play there isn't any. should i replace the wheel bearing? if so how hard is it to change thanks.
I have a 2002 hyundai elantra 125000 mi i have a humming noise coming from the passenger side wheel area when?
You definately have all of the symtoms of a wheel bearing before long you will probably see looseness in the bearing on that side!
I have a 2002 hyundai elantra 125000 mi i have a humming noise coming from the passenger side wheel area when?
Good possibility that it is a wheel bearing but if it is you will need the assistance of a front end shop because it is a sealed bearing that is pressed into a hub.Take it to a shop to get it diagnosed first and see what they would charge to replace it.

Rear wheel bearing or brake going bad.?

my girlfriend has a ford escape and yesterday it started making a pretty bad like squeak or grind noise. it almost sounds like a brake has gone bad but it doesn't change if you put on the brakes, but if you get over like 10ish miles an hour the sound goes away. i think it is either the brake getting bad (it's been a few years since they have been changed) or a bearing has gone bad, but i am by far no mechanic. my real question is she has an appointment for monday at the mechanic but still has to drive 30 mins to work and 30 back (back roads) until then. will the car be okay until monday or should she try to work something out to get her moms car until then (which would be a pain in the... you know)? i just want her to be safe so any mechanics out there help me out.

thanks in advance.
Rear wheel bearing or brake going bad.?
brakes would be the first choice for bearing is a rare thing to go out... as for safe it shoul dhold up but more damage the longer you drive it
Rear wheel bearing or brake going bad.?
yes, it'll be ok to drive---this sound you hear is usually caused by worn brake pads---glazed pads---no big deal----some times just goin in and ruffin the pad surface with sand paper will clear it up------but best to just replace the pads---and rotors--do it right
If the sound changes when you are in a wide turn, with the car leaning to one side, then changes sound again when you turn in the other direction, it's probably a bearing. Usually when they fail, it will make sound in only one direction of turn.
ill tell you what to do. jack it up and spin the wheel and shake it. if its a wheel bearing, it should make a noise. before the brakes can make a noise, you have to put them on, unless you have a spring broke, rubbing on something in the drum.

The bearing can be changed as long as the hub is not ruined.....

I wouldn't go too long with a bad bearing...when it seizes up, be prepared to replace the whole drivetrain on that side...
    NOW.
The bearing can make noise for a while, but if it builds up enough heat (noise comes from friction and friction causes heat and damage), the inner and/or outer race can weld itsself to the spindle or carrier. It that were to happen, it turns a not too difficult fix into an ugly and expensive one. Procrastination is not good in this case. On the other end, it can rumble for thousands of miles and slowly disentegrate untill that wheel loses control, which could be fatal.
It wont pass an MOT like it because the brakes will fail because of it (thats if you dont kill someone first). I had a loose wheel bearing problem with a previous car and because I left it it welded itself to the hub and I had to pay for both.
what you have heard is a complete fluke on there part as some cars can go for miles with problems and others just fail straigh away...

it is entirely up to you whether you want to play that risk but when it does break be prepared for gigantic bill that follows, honestly it is not cheap and when it happened to me i just scrapped the car....
Why wait to change it? It won't cure itself and you are risking doing even more damage, or even worse, having an accident due to a bearing failure (at worst, your wheel may seize).
Time to bite the bullet and get it changed NOW. A couple of hundred dollars spent now could save a thousand later.
replace the cv axel before it is to late if it is a front wheel drive
The longer you leave it, the more it wears the wheel hub that it is fitted into, and if the bearing is dry, it can start to break up inside the hub, and that would be expensive to fix.
Turn your radio up real loud and you can drive for miles and miles without having to listen to it whine !
Are you sure the incessant whine you hear every time you drive around a corner is not just your girlfriend telling you to %26quot;SLOW DOWN%26quot;? Seriously though, GET IT FIXED!
Fix it now! It can lock up and ruin the axle/spindle and could cause a wreck. Don't take a chance. Spend a little now, or a lot later

    OK?................ Ok.
they can, but it may just need grease. It's dead easy to do once you've been shown. well worth a haynes manual.
the other person is right friend.it can freeze up on you and cause more problems.if i were you i would get right on that and get it fixed, because if it freezes up,ill guarentee you, that you wont go anywhere.

DO I HAVE A BAD WHEEL BEARING??? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Just last week I pulled out of work parking lot (which is gravel and mud with big puddle holes. Deep too) and I noticed a humming /vibration coming from under the car. I have a 4wd 2002 ford explorer. The noise/feeliing gets harder to notice at higher speeds, and when I am braking from 40ish, there is a clanking noise. And when I slow down, so does the humming vibration. But! It doesn't see, to be there all the time.

I was parked at a slant recently (uphill), and when I left, the clanking and vibration was the worst it ever was. And today when pulling onto a frontage rd, the turn is a tight turn that you have to slow way down for, and its downhill. And on that turn, I heard a squeeky clanking, and my steering wheel started shaking a bit after straightening out (and soon went away).

I know this is a lot of info. But I thought it would help if I gave as many details as poss. I should add-I had both front wheel bearings changed last year and the problem this time is very similar, but in rear (which I understand can be different things). Any help is much appreciated guys!

    2002 cavalier wheel bearing?

how do you determin which wheel bearing is making noise? when turning to the right the car is quite, when turning left i get alot of bearing noise, i would hate to change the wrong one.
    2002 cavalier wheel bearing?
jack it up and shake the wheel. if it is bad it should shake.
    2002 cavalier wheel bearing?
The only absolute test is to check both sides while the wheels are turning using a mechanics stethoscope.

I have found that 85-90% of the time it will be the bearing on the same side to which you are turning when the noise is loudest, on Front wheel drive cars with integrated double roller bearings which are the most common type. Also note that if you a planning on changing the bearing yourself, know that they are press fit bearings in most applications which means that you will need a press to remove the old and install the new bearing.

Hi, Get the car on Stands make sure it is SAFE lift the car about an Inch off the stands spin the wheel it should sound quiet and smooth, if it sounds rough on the turn that wheel is your problem. It sounds as if it is the N/S Bearing.
jack the front up and put the car in neutral and spin each tire and you should be able to tell which one is bad.
Well..check it yourself or get a mechanic to check, it won't take that long.

    Wheel bearing 97 Acura cl?

I have a 97 acura CL 2.2 with 100 thousand miles. I recently bought it from someone else so I don't know what has been done and what hasn't. There is a growling noise. It is most noticeable when driving around 20 or 30 miles an hour, but it is noticeable at higher speeds as well. I tried to swerve from side to side to see which side the bearing was on, and the sound doesn't change. Had the car looked at by a couple of mechanics, one checked the wheels for play up and down (12 and 6) and couldn't find much if any.

There is also a clicking noise coming from somewhere when you turn and accelerate. It happens most often when turning left, and sometimes when turning right. Especially when accelerating from a stop and turning left like pulling out onto a road, at about a 45 degree angle.

There isn't any bad vibration, even at freeway speeds. Also it doesnt get better or worse with application of the brakes. I know the back brakes need work, but it doesn't sound like grinding; more of a howling.

I thought halfshafts and wheel bearing. Had firestone diagnose. They said transmission had spun a bearing, and thats where the axel noise was coming from too. I had the transmission rebuilt by a different shop for a lot less money. they said that the bearings in the tranny were good, clutch was burnt up, so rebuilt anyway.

Both the bearing noise, and the clicking noise are back, but at least now my tranny shifts smooth.

What's going on? One halfshaft was fairly new, but I heard a lot of remanufactured halfshafts are junk anyway and fail often. How can i tell which wheel bearing is bad? How can I be sure it's halfshafts? Do wheel bearings sometimes fail and the sound doesn't change when you load or unload the wheels? Help Please!

ur bearing(hub) is the problem with the bearing noise the half shaft and bearing need to be changed at the same time.halfshaft will get rid of the clicking the bearing will get rid of the noise(change both sides at the same time)

2000 grand am gt making noise on left side wheel bearing hub maybe i dont no ? do i need to change both side?

It could be the wheel bearing, you probably don't need to replace both, but just a head's up the other might just be about to go too. It might be worth the money just to get both fixed and save yourself some aggrevation.
2000 grand am gt making noise on left side wheel bearing hub maybe i dont no ? do i need to change both side?
Just replace the 1 since the bearings fail at different times. Especially if you live in or around the city, 1 bad pothole will shorten a bearings life so dont sweat replacing both of them.

I got a 99 Grand Am and the driver bearing went @ 90k and the passenger side went @ 120k.

Save the green and just replace the 1 for now.
2000 grand am gt making noise on left side wheel bearing hub maybe i dont no ? do i need to change both side?
What is happening to make you think it might be a bearing problem? What is the car doing? Front or Rear?
    No
No not at all, have it checked to see which side is bad and have them replace only the bad bearing. One side will not cause the other side to go bad and they do not necessarily go bad at the same time.

You will need a hydraulic press to press out the old bearings and press in the new ones.

Usually, you can purchase the bearings online and take them into the shop to have the pressing done the rest is a DIY.

Check out http://mibearings.com for new wheel bearings

I'd recommend getting a service manual, not the Haynes or Chilton type specifically, but a factory one or equivalent. I bought a service manual for my wife's PT from www.promanuals.net it was about 25 bucks or so. I had to call though, they don't have every manual listed on their website. But the number is a 800 one and they have a huge catalog. It came in about 3 or 4 days.
Take off your wheel, remove your brake caliper and remove the brake disc. You may have a metal hub in the center that you have to take off to access the bolt. Pull off your disc and you will have access to your wheel bearing.

Easy job. Make sure you get some wheel bearing grease.

Pop that bering out %26lt; use the allen wrench that comes with the blades %26gt; and insert the new bering.

I've never done that; just saw my friend do it ... usually, I go through 4 brakes, and new wheels ... then I buy a new pair of blades ... it's not like their expensive ... in fact it's more economical to ditch the old and get new ones %26lt;cost of 8 wheels %26lt;$30%26gt;: 16 Bearings %26lt;$40%26gt;: and 4 breaks %26lt;$12%26gt; = $82 vs new blades from $60 to $120%26gt;. Unless you're training for competition, just get the affordable stuff.

    Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?

I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8L V6. A couple of days ago weird clicking noise started coming out of my rear passenger side wheel area. I took it to a mechanic today and he told me it was my wheel bearing and that i need to change it? Can someone tell its the wheel bearing and that it has to be changed just by listening to the noise? Do I really have to get it changed? How much would it cost? the mechanic told me it would take 2 1/2 hours to change it. Is that really such a long process? Can you recommend what kind of wheel bearing I should purchase because they would charge me $130 just for the wheel bearing plus labor while Autozone had a wheel bearing for $70.

I might not know much about cars but that doesn't mean that anyone has the right to make fun of me or my questions. If you dont have a helpful answer then dont respond and keep your jokes to yourself. thanks.
    Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?
You can usually tell what is wrong just by listening to the noise. It could also be the CV Axles that are going bad.

As for time, that is quite long for changing a wheel bearing. A wheel bearing replacement (for one wheel) usually takes from 45min to 1 hr 30 min.

Regrading what bearing brand you should go with, I would suggest http://mibearings.com they have very good bearings (USA made) at very competitive prices. go to their front page, and fill out the form on the right. I would also mention the price quotes you got for the other companies.

I would not suggest Autozone bearings, they could be made in china. Check with the,

Yup, that is the noise for a bad wheel bearing. But what you need to figure out is if its coming from the Left Rear tire or the Right Rear tire. This will save time and money!

I bought my wheel bearing at www.blauparts.com

It was $45 for the part. With my mechanic, it took him an hour to replace. But of coarse he has been working on Audi's for 20 years so he can move fast! hah

So go to www.blauparts.com and the wheel bearing for the Audi A4 is only around $45.00

You don't say what sort of car you've got but changing the wheel bearings is one of the easier jobs you can do yourself. See if you can get a look at a Haynes manual %26amp; if you do decide to do it take your time %26amp; keep things tidy %26amp; in order so putting it back together is simple. You only need a lever or screwdriver, maybe new split pins %26amp; some grease + the new bearings of course, good luck if you go for it.
It'd help if we knew what car your asking about, old type taper bearings are cheap and easy to change , the newer needle type need a press and cost more , i'd do taper type for 20 拢 and other type around 40 to 50 depending on make

    Wheel bearing on 05 f150 fx4?

i am very very strapped for cash . my wheel bearing is out. im going to change it myself . my problem is i dont have a book for torque specs. and im also wondering if i need a puller. ive done tons of gm bearings but never one of these. help..
    Wheel bearing on 05 f150 fx4?
Assuming it is the front wheel bearing you are referring to, it is replaced as a hub and bearing assembly. For the front wheel bearing you will need to remove the brake caliper and pads as an assembly (two 18mm bolts) and support it by hanging onto one of the coils of the front spring. Remove the brake rotor (it just knocks off). You will then need to disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor connected to the frame (as the new hub and bearing assembly comes with a new sensor). You will then need to knock off the small end cap with a flat blade screwdriver. Once removed, remove the nut retaining the end of the shaft (13mm). Once removed, remove the four 18mm bolts on the back side of the steering knuckle and the hub and bearing assembly simply pulls out. A puller is not necessary on the particular vehicle. Installation is just the exact reverse of removal. The torque specs are 20 ft-lbs. for the axle shaft nut, and 148 ft-lbs. for both the caliper and bracket assembly bolts as well as the four hub and bearing retaining bolts. Hope this helps.

  • Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??

When I drive I hear a low rubbing sound within the car that sounds as if it is coming from a wheel. Some people have said it was a wheel bearing going bad because if I change lanes the tone of the rub will change too. I suspect it is a locked up brake caliper. Twice when I took it out of park and put the transmission in reverse, the car seemed to be locked up and then I heard a popping sound like the caliper just broke free. I am wondering if a bad wheel bearing would cause the wheel to lock up and make the same popping sound?? Any clues or advise as to how to determine which is bad?
Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
I would say you have a real bad wheel bearing if it is popping like you say it is, take it to the shop and have them check the problem out before something leaves you stranded or catches fire from too much heat.
Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
if it sounds like a %26quot;clunk%26quot; sound then it might be your bearings, but if it is a different sound. it might be your caliper, and you might need new roders [sp?] becuase that would mean your caliper is lose and its rubbing onto your roders and wearing them down. someone just had the same problem with their car.
A bad wheel bearing, a brake caliper, and if a front wheel drive a constant velocity joint (CV joint) can cause this grinding sound....most likely you have a dry worn out wheel bearing though.
In either even you should pull the wheel and inspect.. cuz either problem is gonna get you in deep CaCa eventually...

either is a pretty quick fix... though not cheap.. even if you have to replace the spindle... neither is a hard fix.. anyone that can work on a car can fix it in about an hour even if they are relativly a newbie...
one way is to jack up car put a shovel under front wheel and see if any movement in wheel' but the best bet is to take off wheel and check out bearings
Jack up the car, spin the wheel and see if you can spin it by hand. If you can, pump the brakes, with it jacked up, and then get out and try to spin it by hand and see if there is any difference.

I would think that a locked up caliper wouldn't allow you to spin the wheel freely, so if you can spin the wheel while jacked up, and in neutral obviously, you will be able to hear the bad bearing, if that is in fact what it is.

    Anyhow, good luck.

Axle for inline skate wheel stuck to bearing spacer. help!?

i'm trying to change wheels for my inline skates but the axle is stuck to the spacer of the bearing. ive tried applying wd-40 and other lubricants but still stuck. help please
Axle for inline skate wheel stuck to bearing spacer. help!?
I am assuming that you have one or two piece axles. Three piece (a screw from each side screws into a threaded spacer) axles are very rare nowdays and very different.

You need to tap the axle out.

If you have two piece axles (a screw goes into the axle from the other side), get a longer screw than the axle ones and screw it completely into the axle so that it sticks out 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Put a wheel or wheels under the frame with the axle in the center hole and tap the wheel out (light taps with a hammer on the screw)

For one piece axles, buy a punch or rest a screw against the screw end of the axle. You can do that with a two piece axle but you have to be careful to not damage the end of the axle or the screw threads.

Is this a bad wheel bearing?

My car shakes pretty bad when I'm driving. Its more of a wobble at 20/30 mph, but its more of a violent shaking at 40/50/60 mph. I jacked the front end up and shook the tires back and forth and it was a little loose. Not much, but there was some %26quot;leeway%26quot; with a faint knocking sound. Now, Im pretty sure the tire was the only thing moving, not the tie rod (thats the only thing i could see without taking the tire off). Is there anything else that could be the culprit besides the wheel bearing? If so, how can you find out?Yes it does. When I'm on the expressway going 55-60 mph, I'll try to keep it within that range or else if I let off the gas its tends to shakes slightly more. It seems as if I keep my foot on the gas, then it wont be as bad of a vibration as if i would let off. Is it a pain to change out the bearing yourself?

Is this a bad wheel bearing?
Number one you should do that test with the tire on to give you more leverage. Number two the should with the tire on support the lower control arm and load it with all the vehicle weight. The grab the tire top and bottom and do the same wiggle type test as you did for the wheel bearing and tie rod ends. The trouble you are describing sound more like a tire with a separated belt or possibly a C/V joint that is sticking. With both front wheels off the ground have someone start the car and pull in drive. Have them release the brakes and you look at both front tires. They should be smooth with no big bumps or side ways movement in them. If they have movement one way or the other it could be the tires or possibly a bent rim. If all seems good then you could have an axle shaft sticking. You will need to go to the repair shop for this one must likely.

Why do they say the ball joint end has to be removed to change? Can I do this myself with basic tools? Don't have hub nut wrench or ball joint puller, I do my own brakes, is this harder?
98 ford taurus front wheel bearing repair?
You need to remove the steering knuckle to press out the bearing with a 10 ton press. I doubt you know how to do the brakes right either. Just throwing pads on doesn't cut it. You will get brake fade and the rotors will end up warping because of the glaze build up on the rotors unless you resurfaced them or replaced them.

Why wont my wheel hub come off?

Why does the wheel bearing on my 2001 Xsara keep failing?

I am having problems with my 2001 1.4 Xsara repeatedly chewing the front drivers side wheel bearings. The fourth bearing since May last year has just failed.

The last time the bearing was changed the mechanic also changed the hub as he thought that might be the cause, but obviously not. Also, not long after the first wheel bearing failed the half-shaft bearing failed. My mechanic said its only the second one he’s had to change in 35years.

Does anybody have any idea what is causing them to fail? Since the half shaft bearing failed, I’m starting to think the driveshaft could be slightly bent or unbalanced causing a vibration which travelling down to the wheel bearing? Any other possibilities?

I should also note that I do only very little mileage. My commute is only around 8 miles per day. The last 2 bearings failed after 150 and 300 miles.

    All advice greatly appreciated
Why does the wheel bearing on my 2001 Xsara keep failing?
ok change your mechanic he isnt doing something right its a sealed unit sheesh

And then change your car its obviously a bad one let someone else take the hits of these repairs.
Why does the wheel bearing on my 2001 Xsara keep failing?
They are a sealed unit and are prone to failure.
Talk to your dealer service department and see what they say.
buy different brand bearing...maybe mechanic is leaving it too tight or too loose..
Very strange, there will be little connection between the drive shaft problem and the wheel bearing problem.

Typically when wheel bearings are changed the amount of %26quot;Tightness%26quot; on the bearings will determine there life expectancy.

Stupid question but is it the same garage who have changed all the wheel bearings? If so possibly it would be an idea to try another garage.

    Ja.
wheel bearing is something that should the life time of or pretty close to it of the car or truck ... failing once id say it happens but twice or more something not right in the front end.... i dont think it would be in the drive train either the spindle or out of line maybe.... have it check with a front end guy or the dealer last place
if the mechanic you go to has only changed 2 axles in 35 yrs he ant much of a mechanic dam i chang 2 yesterday it sounds like incorrect bearing axle nut torque is the cause for the premature bearing failure go to a real mechanic not your shade tree guy
That's ridiculous, wheel bearings last virtually a lifetime in normal use. I hate to say it, but it sounds like your mechanic is either doing something seriously wrong or he isn't looking properly into the cause of the failure(s). The word %26quot;bodger%26quot; comes to mind. I'd go to another.
you said the hub was changed!was it new? i have came across this on many occasions and

9 times out of ten when bearings fail as regular as this ,then the hub is to blame, get your mechanic to check/change hub or change your mechanic
failing in as short a mileage should show an obvious fault.any irregularties in the hub, over torquing the bearing,a seizing brake or a faulty make of bearing.ask the dealers if any known probs and use a dealers bearing also find out the correct bearing torque and discreetly ask the mechanic thats been fitting them how tight they go.short of that i cant say much more!
No answer for you, but the driveshaft on my 2001 Xsara went over the weekend so just bookmarking. Hope you get it sorted, but I'm selling mine as soon as it's repaired as I've had enough of mechanical failures on these cars. Go Japanese next time...

How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?

    i have jeep cherokee 1999
How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?
It will usually sqeal or grind, but if you suspect that a wheel bearing is bad, jack the wheel off the ground then put one hand on each side of the whell and try to wiggle it on the axle, repeat the same top and bottom. If you feel ANY play or clicking, the axle bearing is bad. Also spin the wheel by hand (easier if it's a front wheel on a rear wheel drive or the back wheel on a front wheel drive), again if you hear or feel grinding or any other strange noise it's probably a bad bearing.

Don't be fooled by dragging brake shoes or pads, they frequently have some contact with the drum or disk but the sound emanates from further out on the wheel. To pinpoint the source of the sound put a piece of plastic tube in your ear and hold the other end close to the axle or wheel bearing.

A bad wheel bearing is dangerous and could result in complete loss of the wheel at any time...
How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?
I know I am a girl, but I know a little about this. I have had way too many cars that I have had to change this on.

First, the car will usually make a grinding nose that sounds like it is coming out of the wheel. Also, when you are driving, if you turn the steering wheel to the left and the noise stops, then the right wheel bearing needs replacing. If you turn the wheel to the right and the noise stops, then it the left wheel bearing. Simple enough to figure out which one. But, not simple to change out. It all depends on the car.
yea what she said. Good Job!
you will hear a grinding noise or it u jake up your vehichle and shake the wheel up and down if it moves its bad if dont move its good
you'l hear it mate don't worry
rosey gurl told you the right answer.'
Have the Jeep placed on a lift or lift it and take two hands and shake the wheel and tire if its moving you have a bad bearing.

Wheel bearing dont have a general life spaln but do need to be relubed periodicaly depending on type as there are some sealed units that dont require maintence.
if you are driving down the highway and you see a tire and wheel passing you then you need a new wheel bearing, just kidding

What is causing this whining noise like bad bearings or CV joint?

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback wagon, 2.5L, auto, 63000 original miles. New tires and alignment done and left front outer wheel bearing changed and I'm still having this whining noise from the front, as if nothing was done. My mechanic is stumpped and advises to continue driving until the noise gets worst before spending more money or changing something else. Suggestions?
What is causing this whining noise like bad bearings or CV joint?
sometimes a noise HAS to get worse to pinpoint a problem,,, however he should be able to raise the vehicle disengage traction control and run in gear to pinpoint that type noise.... still sounds like bearing ..does the noise change when going around curves? if so... maybe bearing on other side or defective bearing just been installed....or technician ERROR damaged bearing
What is causing this whining noise like bad bearings or CV joint?
iam just guessing here, but what about a cv joint, like i said, its just a guess.

  • 98 Ford fiesta wheel bearing nut socket size?

I know this is very specific but someone here may know, I'm Changing the shoes and need to remove the baring nut to get the drum off, I don't have the right size socket in my set, what size is it? 27mm is too small (been to Halfords)
98 Ford fiesta wheel bearing nut socket size?
I know most Fords are 32mm socket, and the use of a breaker bar strongly advised as well as a torque wrench for when you are re-fitting.
98 Ford fiesta wheel bearing nut socket size?
I think that it is actually called an axle nut.

    It screws onto the axle.

I suggest http://mibearings.com for wheel bearings. They are USA made and very inexpensive.
Measure nut across the flats of the nut with a metric tape or better still a calliper. You could leave the cap off and drive it to the auto parts store...they will measure it for you.
For a wheel bearing I usually use a large crescent wrench, as should not be on too tight.
probably 32mm like most mazdas as they are made by ford
    30 mm
    Pretty sure they're 32mm
Try here and ask someone who should know.

Clicking noise front driver side wheel?

changed wheel bearing and upper/lower ball joints in 97 mercury grand marquis then I started hearing a clicking sound when turning only to the right. replaced the bearing thinking it was bad, have checked the dust plate and it cannot be the cv joint as this car is a rear wheel drive. Cannot figure out where it is coming from but it sounds like a tin sound

It can only be the bearings or break pad...

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?

I bought a honda civic coupe recently .

yesterday i was driving my mom back from work , and as i was parking , i turned my wheels and i could hear a screeching or shreiking sound coming from the Right Front Wheels .

i did some research on Yahoo answers and it seems that

this could have been a defective wheel bearing or a cv joint .

i called the service center and the manager told me it could be the mud thing making that sound , and he adviced me to check tire pressure . So i did and seemed the air pressure was low on the Right front wheel and put some air in . But the sound didn't %26quot;go away%26quot; . it sounds like 2 thin metal pieces sliding each other ( it's a high pitched shreiking/ screeching sound) i dn't understand what's going on . I dn't have a job right now , looking for a job , should i take it to the honda service center where i bought it ( will it be covered ) , or any service center ...

I was wondering if that exactly is the problem , and how much will it cost me to fix it
How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
I don't think is the cv joints or the bearings, since the bearings will sound (while you're driving) like you are driving a pick-up truck with huge wheels on it, (you know the sound they make)

And if it's the cv joints it will only and ONLY when you turn to either side (clack, clack, clack noise), if it's screeching noise it's the brake pads, check to see if the disks are smooth, that could be the problem, if they 're not change the pads, that should fix the problem!, BUT if they tell you to change the cv joints it's about $70 labor, plus the parts, each side, if you don;t have the money just tell them that you want the affected side (even though the Honda service they'll try to tell you you need to do both) DO ONLY THE ONE, then when you have the money do the other one, i don't think is the bearings...

But whatever you do don't take to the dealer it's gonna cost you a lot!!!, if it's not under warranty off-course.

What you can do to make sure it's not the cv-joints is this:

Turn the wheels to one side and look inside (the other side where you put the nuts that hold the tire) and you'll see a large piece of rubber like a cup, that's called the %26quot;boot%26quot; they'll have a metal ring that holds it in place, if that's loose or you see grease all over it, that's the problem, but like i said before i think is your brake pads. GOOD LUCK!!!
How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
Replace wheel bearings...cheap - CV Joints...very expensive, Tonto!
If it's under warranty, you ought to be covered. It sounds more like a wheel bearing than the CV joint.

Check the rubber boot between the wheel and the transaxle. Look around the boot as well. These things can get a hole and throw grease out. Look for a pattern of grease around the boot. If there is a hole, yes it's the CV joint and it' gonna be expensive. I've never done a Honda CV, but you're looking at $350 +

Can you please give me advice on how to change out wheel bearings on a Mitsubishi Eclipse?

I am working on a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse and the drivers side front wheel bearing is bad. I have taken off everything brakes, control arm lower ball joint, axle, etc. but I can't get the wheel bearing out. There are four bolts that's holding the assymbly in that I took out already. What is the proper method for getting out the wheel bearing? I don't want to screw up because this is my only vehicle. I have heard of people pressing the bearing out with a arbor press. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks in advance.
Can you please give me advice on how to change out wheel bearings on a Mitsubishi Eclipse?
the best advise I can give you from experience...Is to buy your bearings and take the old and new parts to a machine shop....They will have all the tools necessary to do the job the right way...They shouldnt really only charge you about 25 dollars, but you will save more in the long run....
Can you please give me advice on how to change out wheel bearings on a Mitsubishi Eclipse?
you need a bearing puller, it has hooks that go on the back of the bearing and a threaded center piece that you hook a wrench/ beaker bar onto and it pushes on the axle end to pull the bearing out. they sell these at sears but they are not really cheap. you also need a press to put the new bearing back on. the press is really expensive or if you can fabricate a bottle jack w/ bearing sleeve you can press it back on.

those type of sealed bearing need to pressed out. take it to machine shop or a gas station with service bay to make things easy

or you can try to heat it up by a blow torch then use a socket and hammer to knock it out.

to place in new bearing, put everything in the freezer for overnight

your best bet is a press.....less headache
Can you please give me some advice on how to change out wheel bearings?
I'm not 100% sure, but there should be a bearing cap in the center of the brake rotor/hyb.Use a slip-joint pliers to remove cap, there will be a cotter pin going through the slotted nut.Remove pin, remove nut,rotor/hub should just about fall off.Remove inner and outer bearings, clean and reinstall new bearings with fresh grease. This is the normal procedure for a rear wheel drive car, yours is front wheel drive I assume, might be different. The library should have a repair manual if this wrong.Have fun.
A quick search at Advance shows they sell them as a bearing and hub assembly...the cheaper of the two there goes for $93...I don't know why you took off the control arm and ball joint, all you have to do is remove the brake caliper and axle nut (very tight), slip the whole hub off, and put the new one on...tightening the axle nut is very important. Oh yes, the four bolts you mention should be the holding bolts for the strut assembly, that's where it actually attaches to the suspension.

How do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?

i have a 2003 chevy trailblazer i need to replace the wheel bearings on and i would like to know if there is a diagram or a video that would give me the steps to do this
How do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?
Take off your brake caliper and the mount for it. Slide the rotor off of the hub. Disconnect the wiring that goes to the ABS system. Remove the large nut holding the axle shaft in the hub. There should be three or four bolts on the inner side of the spindle that hold the bearing on. Take them out and you should be able to carefully work the bearing loose and pull it out. Slap it back together in reverse order. Make sure you buy a Timken brand bearing. It's not the worst job in the world, but it's also not one you want to do every year because you bought a cheap bearing.
How do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?
try you tube or google it the basic way is to put the vehicle on safe jack stands and remove the parts needed to completely remove the rotor then remove the wheel bearing then clean the hub and repack with recomened grease then reinstall in reverse order do not over tighten the nut holding it on the spindle

Problem with my 2003 cavalier making noises when turning the wheel....?

Ok, I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS with 52,000 miles on it. It's in great mechanical condition, never had any problems prior to this. The problem I seem to have is that whenever I turn the wheel to the right even the slightest bit, I get a whirring/humming noise. It's sometimes noisy and sometimes kinda subtle, but it's always there whenever I turn the wheel to the right side. Anytime I have the steering wheel in the normal position (facing straight ahead), or to the left it sounds 100% normal. There's no tightness in turning, and it hasn't gotten worse even thought I've been dealing with it for about a month. I got my wheel bearing changed thinking that was the problem, but it didn't help. I checked my PS fluid, and it's at regular levels, so I'm pretty sure it's not anything with the pump or any leaks in the power steering. Does anyone have any idea what this sounds like?
Problem with my 2003 cavalier making noises when turning the wheel....?
Sounds like a piston cup in the power-rack is leaking by. I replaced one in my Sunbird a couple of years ago and a re manned unit only cost about $80.Fun job though! Good Luck! ;-)=
Problem with my 2003 cavalier making noises when turning the wheel....?
check your power steering fluid level. it will whine if it's too low on fluid.

How do i change the front wheel on my 91 honda accord?

i have a 91 honda accord ex 5psd. it doesn't have ABS. how do i change the right front (passenger front) wheel bearing?
How do i change the front wheel on my 91 honda accord?
Jack the car up, chalk back tires and put parking brake on. Remove front wheel, remove caliper, rotor, tie rod, lower ball joint, center nut on outer cv joint, remove spindle assembly from car, put spindle on your press, remove c-clips and seals, press old bearing out, press new bearing in. Reverse procedure to install.
How do i change the front wheel on my 91 honda accord?
front wheel drive car remove brakes remove bolts holding axle remove bolts holding strut pull away spindle give axle a few good tugs and it will pop out.. and best you let someone do it that knows and replace both sides is smarter
You will need to have a hub shark or press to get it out as it is pressed in. You may be able to rent a hub shark from a local tool store, or remove the hub and take it to a machine shop to have the bearing pressed in and out. If you need instructions on how to get the hub off, let me know. I'll tell you right now that it's a real pain to do, so if you've never done the rotors or anything on it, plan for a half day even with good instructions unless you have someone there that's done it before. The rotor fits over like one of those metal puzzles where you have to turn it just so to take it off and the whole hub attaches to the knuckle with 4 bolts in the back of the knuckle.
Remove tire , brake caliper, and rotor, then cap, cotter pin, and nut, jiggle the hub a bit to remove outer bearing slide of hub, be sure to replace both inner and outer bearings. Good Luck

Is white lithium grease suitable for a wheel bearing overhaul on my MTB?

It has an operating temperature up to 400 degrees F according to the package. Is it durable enough or should I change to heavier stuff? I don't want to wear anything out or have the grease melt and run out of the seals.
Is white lithium grease suitable for a wheel bearing overhaul on my MTB?
Absolutely. It's what I use for general overhauls on all bearing surfaces.

If speed and performance is what you want, try the %26quot;trackmens slack%26quot; technique on your hubs... get everything in there super clean then lubricate with light machine oil- Tri Flow will work well too... then run the bearings slightly loose. The wheels will spin forever but will require rebuild after every race.

That will be fine, I dont know why you think the temps will get anywhere close to that.

  • Wheel bearing?

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings if you go to a shop, is it expensive or is it better to change it your self.
    Wheel bearing?
That depends entirely on the car you have! Most older cars that are rear wheel drive have very inexpensive bearings in them. Many new cars and trucks have the wheel bearing as part of the front hub so parts and labor could be VERY expensive in some cases. BUT EITHER way the price is different on every make and model of car.
    Wheel bearing?
If you don't know how to do it, you're better off getting aa shop to do it. You can easily ruin new wheel bearings if you don't make sure the bearing races are good, and the new ones are tightened correctly. Replacing bearing races is a little more complicated than the bearings themselves.

Does anyone know how to remove the wheel bearing locknut on a 4wd 1995 nissan pickup?

I really need to change the brake rotors, is there somekind of special tool to take this locknut off or is there a trick to turning it?
Does anyone know how to remove the wheel bearing locknut on a 4wd 1995 nissan pickup?
Once you get the small plate off with the two small screws the nut will be exposed. On the nut you will see two holes, just get a punch and stick it in one of the holes and use a hammer and tap it counter clockwise, you dont need any special tools for that.
Does anyone know how to remove the wheel bearing locknut on a 4wd 1995 nissan pickup?
    remove cotter key.
Some tool websites indicate that there is a special socket with 2 or 4 tabs that extend from the sockets end. I assume the tabs engage with some part (washer or shim or something) that make it necessary to have this particular tool.

Are any "speciality" tools required to change out the front wheel bearing assembly on a 03 3/4 ton Dodge?

The only %26quot;speciality%26quot; tool you will need is a 12 pt socket to take the hub and bearing retaining bolts out.
Are any %26quot;speciality%26quot; tools required to change out the front wheel bearing assembly on a 03 3/4 ton Dodge?
as far as taking it out no but you might need to put it in with a pressure machine take it to like a pepboys or lacal mechanic

Has anyone ever changed a front driverside wheel bearing on 04 Aztec if so easy or not special tools rec or no

That is a bolt on hub, no pressing I think. Not bad to do. you need a large socket 34 or 36 mm for the axle nut and you need to torque it to spec, approx 250 ft lbs.
Has anyone ever changed a front driverside wheel bearing on 04 Aztec if so easy or not special tools rec or no
wheel bearings must be pressed in, otherwise you will crack it trying to install it using other methods.

How important is a wheel bearing?

i have a wheel bearing passenger side of my s-10 starting to howl. pretty sure its toast. i do small maintenanceon my vehicles, changed a clutch a few years ago on my nissan. can i do this myself without much complication, special tools, and could i mess it up
How important is a wheel bearing?
Not hard to do,but make sure you pack the new bearings with grease.I don't mean rub some grease on them,I mean PACK.If you don't it want be long before they seize and then you will have a problem.
How important is a wheel bearing?
I've changed many bearings in my life. If you have decent tools and are not afraid to get the book and follow the directions-go for it.
    Cake
Get a maintenance manual, your tools and have fun.
Yes you can do it. Yes you need a tool that will pack the new bearings with grease (easily and cheaply available at your local auto parts store). Yes you can mess it up. ;-) Just be careful not to over-tighten the nut that holds the bearing in.

Oh, and a wheel bearing is important. Actually, it's critical. I had one go bad and I kept driving on it (I was on a trip and in the middle of nowhere.). The wheel caught fire and burned the vehicle to the ground.

Fix it sooner rather than later though. A bad bearing can damage other components.

can any1 give me instructions on how to change a rear wheel bearing on my 1996 pontiac voyager minivan?
    Rear wheel bearing?
    Pontiac makes a minivan?

    ADDED:

    It's a complete hub assembly. +/- $80.00 each.

and just unbolts from the rear axle.

    ADDED:

    Rear drum.

    Remove the wheel.

    Remove the brake drum.

Remove the bolts from the BACK side of the axle.

It may be a pain in the @$$ to slide out as it probably rusted it's self in the axle tube.

    Then reverse the procedure.
    Rear wheel bearing?
1st off you're gonna need to buy the whole hub assembly not just the bearing. that will cost around 85ish

is it disc or drum brakes? probably disc. so:

    1st: take off your tire

2nd: remove your brake caliper assembly (theres two bolts holding your caliper together on the back side one on top one on bottom and if i remember right its an allen bit)

    3rd: remove your brake rotor

4th: remove your drive axle nut

5th: the hub is held into the housing by three tabs each with a bolt in it, the front part of the hub (that you can spin) itself has three holes in it, THERE IS ONLY ONE HOLE OUT OF THE THREE THAT THE BOLT WILL COME OUT OF ITS CALLED THE %26quot;PEEKHOLE%26quot;!!! so you will need to spin the front part of the hub so it lines up with the bolts each time you take one out

6th: slide the hub out of its housing (make sure your whole rear end is level it will make removing the hub easier and not doing so could damage the splines on your axle, etc...

7th: put your new hub back on and redo all this crap

oh make sure to be careful with your brake caliper assembly when your ready to put your caliper back on your going to need to depress the plunger back inside the caliper with a 3 inch %26quot;c clamp%26quot; also make sure you dont be too rough with the caliper because you dont want to mess up the sensor position.

hope this helps, sorry for the length
lift da car then unscrew the screws then pull it out then put the new on in the screw it on the your DONE :)
    Instructions as follows . . .

Buy a repair manual (or take it to a shop).

    I thought Plymouth made the Voyager . . . . .
It,s not that hard, but you need to have the right bearing removal tool.
Are you absolutely sure it's a bearing ?? Very unusual for a vehicle this new. What is the problem before you get in over your head ? If you have a bearing out it will be leaking rear end lubricant. If you have a brake cylinder leaking it will be brake fluid. Find out which you are leaking. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem

Which wheel has bad wheel bearing?

My wife's Malibu has a bad wheel bearing, pretty sure. It has a rapid tapping noise coming from the front, that gets louder as she goes faster. It sounds like it's coming from the driver side, but when the car turns right the noise almost completely goes away. And when the car turns left, the noise doesn't change. Does that mean that the right side is bad? Thanks.
Which wheel has bad wheel bearing?
Jack up the car and rotate the wheel to see if you can hear the noise. Wheel bearings usually make a grinding noise when they're bad. Check the tread to see if there's a pebble stuck in it.
Which wheel has bad wheel bearing?
Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing, sounds like a cv joint. Jack the side up you think is the problem and move the bottom of the tire in and out to see if you have any play, if you have play here it is your wheel bearing. Then put the car in neutral, with wheels scotched and rotate the wheel feeling for the tapping, this could be a cv joint.
Take a look at the CV axles. Could be a bad CV axle.
You are rite it is a wheel bearing and it is the left side that is bad as when you take pressure off the bearing it gets quiet,if it were a cv joint it would be constant and not change when turning.
Wheel bearings are a common problem on these malibus. But the diagnoses is really easy, if you know the trick. A CV joint will clunk and pop on accelerattion and usually decreases with speed, but a wheel bearing will increase noise with speed. Now to determine which side is bad, it's as easy as, which way do you turn when the noise decreases the problem is on that side. When the vehicle turns right, the vehicles weight shifts left, which unloads the right/passenger side, and the noise decreases. There is also a way to verify which side is the problem, by jacking the wheel just slightly off the ground and try to move it from side to side, and up and down. If the bearing is bad, you will feel the slop as you wiggle the tire. Hope this helps and good luck. Christopher

When changing a hub and bearing assembly on a 2003 4wd Yukon, what should I be careful of?

What should I clean the mating surfaces with and should I use a sealer or is that surface just a machine fit? Do I need grease for the bearing or is it completely factory greased? 80k and the bearing has apparently loosenned. Wheel shakes back and forth.
When changing a hub and bearing assembly on a 2003 4wd Yukon, what should I be careful of?
With that many miles you should take it to a mechanic..
When changing a hub and bearing assembly on a 2003 4wd Yukon, what should I be careful of?
dirt, lack of grease, loose or worn bearings, get the book don't take the chance, 12 dollars, because you put it together wrong, too loose etc, you can kill yourself and all who ride with you, it is worth a child's, or wife's life. think about it
It is a sealed unit, which needs no grease.just be careful with the wheel speed sensor wires coming out from back of brg assembly, its easy to cut or pull the wires out of the new one when installing.,and don`t over-torque the nut on the drive-axle.Ck torque specs.
What you should be careful of, is if it takes you more than 30 minutes to change it. Remove the caliper, rotor, and hub nut. The hub assembly is a bolt on. Just unbolt it, and bolt the new one on. You might want to get the axle hub nut loose before raising the vehicle and removing the wheel. That thing is a bear.

What will happen if you continue to drive a car with a bad wheel bearing/hub assembly?

My girlfriend has a 2000 Dodge Neon that has bad wheel bearings on both sides. I haven't had time to change them yet and they are making a loud grinding noise while she is driving. I'm wondering what can happen if you continue to drive on them? Thanks in advance!
What will happen if you continue to drive a car with a bad wheel bearing/hub assembly?
i had a wheel bearing explode on my car. course its a 1970. so the neon i think has a sealed bearing type. anyways, what happened is the bearing blew up and luckily everything else held up when it did and i didnt loose the whole wheel. i knew someone that had bad wheel bearings and drove on em for months and months. my car didnt give any warning to them being ready to go out. so youre playin some russian roulette. get em dun asap. to be safe. or at least let your girl drive your car and you drive hers.
What will happen if you continue to drive a car with a bad wheel bearing/hub assembly?
they can seize on the spindle or damage the spindle ,so you would have to replace not only the bearings but also the spindle, have them replace a.s.a.p.
The wheels may fall off, and ruining your front brake as well as anything under the car oil pan, steering component, and may even get kill or kill other people!

Have her park the car until you can fix it.
Well, they may just seize up and could cause an accident when it happens. I would not drive that car anymore or you may have a worse scenario on your hands.
Wost case scenario, the wheels lock up.

Best case, they continue to make noise and cut your MPG.
Dodge hub bearings are easy to replace( front or rear ) Cheap too, from AutoZone. Why would you continue to drive with bad bearings?
Many very bad things. Have her park it until you get time to fix it.

i have seen a wheel come of because the hub broke but that's worst case scenario
wheel lock-up or wheel catch on fire.

really depends on how adept you are with tools and if you have the right tools for the job. Unless you know what you are doing, take it to the shop.

Be sure you or they pack the grease well into the new bearing prior to inserting. And make sure the spring clip is well seated before buttoning things back up.

A good technician who does this for a living should be able to dissemble, remove and replace the bearing and put things back together in an hour or two. Depends on how long he takes for a break.

Camery 2004 changed both front wheel bearing but when accelerate the car is still 20% vibrating?
could be tires or wheels or axles... do this test put in drive let roll no gas what you feel any shake or wiggle bad wheel or tire if its pass speed of 40 or higher good chance its tire balance or driver train which is axle s or drive shaft you should have just axles so check your tires and wheels
Camery 2004 changed both front wheel bearing but when accelerate the car is still 20% vibrating?
well first thing to do is see if your tires are in good condition (check for shifted belts or unusual wear). Their aren't too many components up front that would cause vibration other than the tires.

Changing rear hub bearing/problem with ABS? 2?

From what I can make out of your problem......1: the mechanic says the rear wheel bearings are bad . (is it just one bearing or both sides?) Both sides, in 陆 hour working on it. Is it possible? I guess just by turning the wheel with hands?

2: he wants to change out the ABS sensors to;......( why does he want to change the ABS sensors?)

Because he says, he has to take out speed sensor (ABS) before taking the bearing. Someone here was saying the sensor is mounted on backing plate, and you have to remove the plate first, I guess he referring to Hub bearing as in the following diagram #4. http://www.slhondaparts.com/browse.asp?Model=CR%2DV%26amp;Year=2005%26amp;TrimLevel=5DR+LX+4WD%26amp;TransLevel=5ATKA%26amp;Section=F%26amp;Category=B++1910%7CREAR+BRAKE%26amp;Doors=5%26amp;Emissions=KA%26amp;PartCatalogId=14S9A0%26amp;ViewParts=true

3: there is no reason to change the ABS sensors just because you are changing wheel bearings ; and if only one bearing is bad why does he want to change out both sides? According to above if ABS setting on hub or back plate and you should take it out or not to get to bearings?! I am confused here??
Changing rear hub bearing/problem with ABS? 2?
generally speaking if one wheel bearing is failing the other is right behind it. this is not ALWAYS the case...but it happens enough to make it a good idea. Secondly, there is a labor savings to do both of them at the same time vs. doing one and then later the other. as to the ABS sensor....unless it has a broken wire or some other failure...it does NOT need to be replaced just because the wheel bearings are
Changing rear hub bearing/problem with ABS? 2?
Most garages will recommend changing both sides as part of their standard procedures. (Ball joints, Wheel bearings, Universal joints) In the LONG run, it could save you time and money! You, as the owner, can decide to one- both- or all.

Wheel speed sensors are very close to the rotating hub or bearing and if you have play (especially in a bearing) the sensor could get damaged.

Things happen to other things when they get loose or have wear. A visual inspection of the components as well as testing them should prove if you NEED to replace them or if it is just a good idea. You can always get a second opinion from another repair shop. Be sure you check their credentials!
Turning the wheels by hand and listening is an easy way to identify a bad wheel bearing. It is possible that both wheel bearings are bad, although I find this a bit unusual. As for the 'preventative maintenance' the previous two posters mentioned, well, I am not a big fan of it. There are certain instances where it would be a good idea to do things in pairs -- like Ford twin I-beam balljoints -- but in this case, unless both of them are bad, there is little reason to do both sides. I see no reason to change the ABS sensors.

So, if I were you, I would get a second opinion. It is possible for them to both be bad and it is also possible to identify them both as bad within 30 minutes, but I would say that it is slightly unusual, though far from impossible, for them both to be bad. But, because of his unusual request to change the ABS sensors, I find myself a bit suspicious of the mechanic.

Wheel bearing or tie rod end and will i have to change the axel too?

my 01 maxima has been making a squeak sound when i take left turns and a rubbing sound its been like that for almost an year and today i noticed that when i changed the wheels the front driver side wheel is wobbly which explained the squeak and the rubbing sound coz the wheel can hit aginat the dust shield (i mean along with he rotor and caliper and the nuts are well tighten) my dad said its the wheel bearing but some ppl say its the tie rod ends, so what can it be and also will i have to change the axel too since i drove the car lik 5000miles that way
Wheel bearing or tie rod end and will i have to change the axel too?
ANd the sound of a helicopter landing on your front fender did not tip you off to the wheel bearing was going bad. You will need a new drive flange and wheel bearing. The wheel flange gets worn if there is excessive play in the wheel bearing. It requires a 12 ton press to change the bearing. Once you quiet down that noise you may be able to hear something else. LIKE THE RADIO
Wheel bearing or tie rod end and will i have to change the axel too?
that could be a lower ball joint causing that or tie rod ends or even the wheel bearings, you need to take it and have a shop check this,if something falls off of it,you, loose the steering on it,have shop check this as soon as you can, your taking a chance driving it like this, good luck.
You better take it to a shop. This is not a job for someone trying to save a few bucks. You'll wreck the car, and might be hurt or killed, or worse, kill someone else.

Any small local shop should be able to take care of this for you, but you might be better off by telling them what it's doing and let them tell you what it might be that's causing your car to do what it's doing .The reason i say this is if you just go to the shop and tell them to replace the wheel bearings that's all they will do ,even if that's not the problem.

My car makes a humming noise especially when i turn the wheel, what could be the problem?

my 2000 sebring convertable is humming when it goes past 20 mph and gets even louder when i turn right. i had the left wheel bearing changed but the right side still is very loud. Do i need to change the right side or would it be something like the cv shaft i also heard maybe belts or the power stearing fluid might be the problem. i just need to know which part of the car to fix
My car makes a humming noise especially when i turn the wheel, what could be the problem?
If you had to have your left bearing changed it sounds like you need to change the right one too. it sounds like if you drove your car very long with the left one being bad by the time you got it changed the strain on the right one wore it out. In most cases it is better to change both at the same time.

I am surprised that the mechanic didn't insist you should change both of them since they usually wear out evenly.

Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?

I have a 1999 Sunfire with a 2.2 engine automatic transmission. The front driver wheel bearing/hub is beginning to squeal - How hard is this to change? Is there any specific information that I need to know before doing it?
Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?
The front hub assm. is very easy to change. After getting the wheel off remove the spindle nut (the large nut in the center of the hub). The disconnect the ABS wires ( if equiped). Now the only thing left is to remove the mounting bolts. You must be carful when reinstalling the mounting bolts because if the bolts are over tightened the backing plate will crush the bearing and before you know it you will be replacing it all over again.
Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?
not hard, you should clean the rust off the knuckle before installing new one and watch out for wheel speed sensor if equiped, you might have to remove it but thats not a big deal
First of all usually the Hub doesn't make a squealing noise, should sound like a low humming at first then becomes a louder grinding noise...Do these test for me...whichever wheel you think it is...jack it up and see if you can move the tire from side to side or either up and down...if the hub is bad the tire will feel loose...If it is OK, the the squeal might be coming from your brake pads..You have a wear indicator that lets you know it is time to change your brake pads..Look for grooves cut into you rotor...If you need more help email me back..

If the mechanic asked me i should change the front wheel bearing is it asap or could it wait?

If it is rear wheel drive, it is only $20 to change a bearing, and you can to it yourself in an hour.

If it is front wheel drive, it requires a press and is beyond most people.

But you will be able to tell if you have a really bad bearing, because you will get vibration through the brake pedal and steering wheel, and the brake pedal will get softer, while the car will tend to veer side to side slightly. But it can wait a bit if front wheel drive.
If the mechanic asked me i should change the front wheel bearing is it asap or could it wait?
If it is rear wheel drive, then grease and adjust the bearing immediately. It is easy and will prevent the bearing from going bad, because looseness causes pounding. $40.

If it is front wheel drive, I would put it off as long as possible because $200 and can't hurt to wait.

Wheel bearings are VERY important. They keep your wheel on the axle... however they are VERY easy to fix yourself! If you are at all mechanically inclined you can go get a new bearing at Advance Auto and fix it yourself!
depends why he told you that, if the wheel is rocking on the bearing it should be done soonish if the bearing is noisy it can go thousands of miles , if the car is rear wheel drive the front bearings can be adjusted and regreased,

you cannot do a front wheel drive bearing yourself it needs a massive wrench and a ten ton press to get the bearing off and press a new one on, and if it is not pressed exactly square it will wreck the suspension or be undriveable
Hey: The mechanic most likely advised you to change your wheel bearing because he may have noticed pits or scratches on them. You can wait to replace them if they are not too bad. He recommended the replacement for a reason and you should trust his word and replace them in a timely manner.

any auto parts store will carry the wheel bearing. As for installation, if it's a press-on bearing, you'll need to have a shop do the work.

    www.advanceautoparts.com
Auto parts stores used to carry those things. Try the autoparts store first. If they don't have it, you can remove the old bearing and bring it in to a bearing distributer's customer service desk. They probably carry them.

If all else fails, go to the Honda dealer parts department. The bearing will cost more, ($50?) but you will probabaly get the right part the first time.

Replacing the front wheel bearing requires removing the wheel, then the brake caliper must be lossened and relocated, then remove the brake rotor. Then you must remove the wheel hub, which requires a large metric socket that most shade tree mechanics don't have.

This will expose the bearing. The bearing must be pulled from the hub using a bearing puller. Then replaced.

When you put everything back together, make sure you get the torque settings right, especially the nut that holds the wheel hub in place.
This bearing must be pressed out, and the new one in, with special service tools. Your cheapest option is to grab a complete steering knuckle from a salvage yard. Try to be sure the car wasn't hit on that side and spin the hub briskly while holding the knuckle: if you hear/feel grinding, the bearing's no good. If you're handy, you can swap the knuckle yourself. Just be sure to torque the axle nut correctly, or you'll harm the bearing. Get a wheel alignment afterward.

remove cover and drain oil with vehicle on jack stands and the suspect wheel removed.use a 6 sided socket to remove the bolt holding the bevel gear shaft in.(this is directly to the side of your large ring gear, its the shiny shaft inside that cage looking contraption.)with drift/dowel bolt removed, start the shaft out enough to get the drift bolt into the hole in the end of the shaft.rotate to the back side, insert drift and work out shaft.bevel gears can now be removed.shove the axle in.this should make a cclip fall out of the end of the axle.it can now be removed.remove seal(probably had to remove brake caliper etc)then using a puller and adapter, just remove the bearing.(i usuall just skillfully cut the bearing with a torch hear, saves me tons of frustration)coat the new bearing with new recomended oil and install in reverse order.the c-clip may be a bit tricky.make sure to tap the dowel/drift bolt when reinstalling,or it may work itself back out.some use locktite here,i dont.

  • Rear wheel bearing change on a astra 1.6 year2000?

Back off the rear brakes, at the handbrake and if necessary by adjusters on the other end of the cables. using 32 mm socket, remove the hub/bearing nut, pull the hob off the bearings will slide out if not damaged, but be sure to remove all of its parts IE the bearings and the races, this will require pullers or if you are careful a chisel or swage, and a few sharp cracks in the right direction, with a hammer.

The reverse for refitting them and the correct torque used when back together, don't forget your brake cables, reset.

If you turn the wheel while driving and the noise changes, yes, I agree, its probably a wheel bearing, which is sold as a hub assembly. Be best to have someone diagnosis it for you to make sure what side its coming from, as they are expensive and you might not want to do both if only one is bad. Costs can vary, labor is usually around 100 dollars and the part can be around 150-250, per side, depending on the quality of the part, remember, cheaper isn't always better. I agree, if you decide to do it in yourself, it would be a lot cheaper, but shops like all businesses mark-up the part , selling parts at cost will put a shop out of business real quick, Good luck

Front wheel bearing jobs for that car could run about $300 parts and labor for one side. The wheel bearings usually cost about 90 bucks each.
You need to take it to someone who knows what they are listening to before you waste your money on parts that don't fix the problem. Thinking you know what the problem is can get expensive.
That sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me.

You can purchase new wheel bearings for the front at http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/513137鈥?/a>

    They are $84 a piece.

Labor (unless you are going to do it yourself) is from $70 to $150 an hour and it generally takes about an hour for one bearing.

    I hope that helps!
